I'm much more of a metal and rock kinda guy. I used to listen to rap a few years ago but then I pretty much completely changed my taste in music. The closest thing to rap I listen to these days is Linkin Park.
I listen to both popular rock that you'll hear when you turn on the radio like Metallica and also the type that a lot of people don't know of such as Saliva or Drowning Pool.

Wow, I'm like, the exact same way.  :D coolness!

The only rap I listen to is Eminem and that is because he doesn't follow a particular sound.  Rock is my favorite genre of music just because there is soo many varieties of it that you never get tired of it.

I have heard both Saliva and Drowning Pool on the radio. Go listen to some good metal. Not the main stream crap. (cept Metallica, they aren't crap even tho they are fairly mainstream)

I wouldn't compare the two in the sense of superiority or which tops which. They sound different, they appeal to me personally in different ways from each other. You people suck.

hmm.. well, just because a band is in the mainstream doesn't automatically make it crap. For example, Evanescence.. the songs you hear on the radio "Bring Me To Life" and "My Immortal" are definitely not the best songs by which to judge the band itself. You have to listen to much more than that to get a real idea of the band's true talent and originality.
I dunno.. I just tend to look more at the meaning behind the lyrics of a song as well as the instrumental talent of the artists rather than whether it's considered mainstream or not. That's why I literally never listen to the radio if I can help it. People stereotype everything they hear on the radio as mainstream and label it as "crap" without even giving it a chance.

There is nothing wrong with the radio, I listen to it sometimes (in the car, play it in the bathroom when I am taking a shower...etc) however, he said Saliva and Drowning Pool are less mainstream when they are exactly the opposite. They are extremely mainstream pop-metal. I am simply saying, he has not gone to the  metal found past the radio, where the true talent is at.

Odviously they have some talent, or something which gives them record sales, but if you dive deeper, you often find the less popular metal is far more complex and moving. So I think I can label it 'crap' cuz I have given it a chance. Where do you think I started?? I started by listening to the radio and watching some dumb 'Shark Attack" music video show that used to be on tv. I was happy with it at first, then friends suggested some less popular bands, and I realize there is a huge difference.

Popmetal is just like pop punk, pop hip hop, pop rap (I could go on), all of it is made to sell records, catchy little tunes that get stuck in your head.

I think with either genre, the better music is almost always underground. Most mainstream songs you hear on the radio are poor examples to judge by. Songs with meaningful lyrics seem to always be the lesser known. This holds true, I'll admit, even with bands such as Evanescence, for example. My favorite artist- although, the overplayed songs "My Immortal" and "Bring Me To Life" are not at all the best songs to listen to when forming your opinion of them.
The best rap artists to listen to before judging the entire genre are ones that few people have even heard of. Immortal Technique seems to be one of them. I, myself, have never heard of them, but many people seem to use them as an example. Tupac Shakur also is a decent artist who writes realistic lyrics, even I know that.
As far as rock goes, you have to listen to stuff besides Good Charlotte or Simple Plan to form an opinion of the overall genre. I would reccommend listening to a variety of artists because there are countless sub-genres of rock. There's punk, hardcore, emo, metal (which in itself has several sub-genres of its own- ex: goth-metal, heavy metal, death metal, etc.). It's really impossible to judge all rock based on a few songs because there is such a wide spectrum of sub-genres. The best underground and/or lesser known rock artists include Nightwish, Smile Empty Soul, Lostprophets, Poe, and Taking Back Sunday.
I personally don't care much for rap because most of it's just annoying to me, but I have a lot of respect for the kind that you don't hear on the radio very much even though I don't listen to it either. There are some songs that are an exception however, for example, "Where Is the Love?" by The Black-Eyed Peas. This song has a LOT of meaning in its lyrics, despite the fact that it is horribly overplayed on the radio.

So there ya go. Neither genre is better than the other. It's all a matter of opinion and nothing more.

I agree!! It is really what music you are in to! I myself used to listen to rap, pop etc but then when i got older i went searching for music with eeper more meaningful lyrics i can relate to! In other words i found punk and rock! Neither is better! Its just an poinion! but ignorant people don't seem to get that! They just carry on arguing! Each genre is special and unique in its own way. That is why we have something called a genre so we have a choice and can create an opinion.

Yeah, I see what you mean. But I've actually like, never heard either Saliva or Drowning Pool played on the radio. Then again, I very rarely listen to it.
I understand what you're saying about the difference between the less popular bands and the mainstream ones. Nightwish is one of the most incredible bands I, personally, have ever heard.. and you know, NO ONE I know has ever heard of them. But I also think that Evanescence is another one of the most incredible bands I've ever listened to, and every other person I talk to knows who they are.  So, I dunno... I guess it just depends on how you view a specific band.
