A Greenwich mother is under arrest and accused of dropping her baby on her head, then driving off drunk! Police say 18-year-old Krista Cherry dropped the 5-week-old onto the pavement Friday night. The baby is still in the Glens Falls Hospital, but her injuries are not considered life-threatening. NEWS10's Anya Tucker has more on what police say happened.
In a photo taken by police, little Madison Brown sleeps quietly. But the large bruises on her face and nose tell the story of how police say the little 5-week-old has endured severe abuse, police say, at the hands of her mother.
"I just think it goes back to what she told us, is that she could not deal with the baby anymore," says Cambridge-Greenwich Police Chief George Bell.
Police say Krista Cherry was drunk and had been in a fight with the baby's father and another man when she tried to put her baby in a car and take off from her Van Ness Avenue apartment. The neighbor who called 9-1-1 said she saw Cherry holding her baby in her arms while she was trying to get into her car, but because she was intoxicated, the baby tumbled out of her arms.
Police say Cherry then took off, and was spotted in her car 20 minutes later, about a block away.
"She told us that she was under a lot of stress and she could not deal with the child and wanted to get away from it all," Chief Bell says.
Cherry is out on bail, but charged with felony assault, DWI and operating a vehicle without a license. The baby's father, Brandon Brown, is also facing charges of child endangerment, as well as supplying the booze to the baby's 18-year-old mother. We knocked on their door Monday, but could not make contact with the parents.
Police tell us that the baby is expected to make a full recovery, and when released, police say she will go into the care of her maternal grandmother.
