Hotel room service

Ok, so I'm doing summer work at an international business class hotel chain and for the past few days i've been working in the room service department.

As you would imagine I have to collect orders made to the department and take the order to a guests room. If you have ever ordered room service at a hotel im sure you will be familiar with this...

As the chain of hotel that I work for is a business class chain there is a rather large emphasis on providing a high level of service.

I am supposed to do more than just take a guests food to their room.. and in a bit I will explain step by step what I am expected to do.. Im just wondering whether, even for business customers you think this is too much!

I am told to nock on the door (three times), and call "good evening (morning, day, depending on time), room service" and then wait for the customer to open the door. I am then expected to greet the guest by their name (which we have on file), and say "I have you food order Mr Smith". I then have to ask permission to enter the room and ask where 'Mr Smith' would like me to put the tray. I then take the metal cover from over the plate and explain what is on their plate.. I am then told to offer to top up ice, take out laundry and ask if there is anything else I could do for them. After they answer I am told to tell them they can call room service if they want their tray removed or just to leave it outside.. I then have to thank the guest, get him / her to sign for it and wish them a good evening / good meal.

Now I just think that's a bit much.. and I get the impression (through body language) that most of them just want me to drop off the food and bugger off.. but I'm told to do this every time regardless! I once walked in on a couple that were obviously in the middle of sex.. so I decided to just leave it then.. but I just think its a bit much!

What do you think?

Seems a bit much. I'd rather have them drop off my food and leave.

Well, the people having sex isn't your fault. Shouldn't have done that while expecting room service.

Well, I recently worked at the front desk at a hotel and we had a similar process, with just as many things to say. You really only need to worry about procedure if your manager is watching over you or if you know there is an inspector at the hotel(ie: mystery shopper). Have you been training with any of the other servers? Ask a server who has been there a long time how they follow the procedure.
