Book Title- The Death and Life of Sylvia Plath

Book Author- Ronald Hayman

Genre- Biography

Quick Synopsis- Well, it does what it says on the tin really, but is fascinating even for those who have not read anything by Sylvia Plath. It is a perceptive portrait of her depression, and also analyses parts of her poems, which are exceptionally autobiographical.

What was right with it? It explains her state of mind well, due to her extensive diaries, and also discusses her relationship with Ted Hughes.

What was wrong with it? Sometimes you feel the writer gets too bogged down in textual analysis of her poems and 'The Bell Jar'. These parts would maybe be more satisfying if a copy of her novel and a couple of collections were close to hand.

Mark out of 10- 8

Recommended age of reader- A mature 14 year old probably, as there is a lot of talk of depression and suicide, and some in-depth exploration of psychological ideas.

t's 50p here, but children can't reserve. And you're not an adult until you're 16. And since I read from the adult section, and have done for about the past two years, my library card is accumalating dust in my purse while I use my mum's, and when I've filled that one up, my dad's as well.

Isn't it odd how things differ in different counties? Can you not take adult books out on a child's ticket then?

Book Author: Laura Wiess

Genre: fiction- family crisis  

Quick Synopsis: This book is about a young girls who was molested by her father when she was yound he made her watch him and her mother having sex. Her mother never belived her. He ends up getting out of gail early in order to save herself and others she has to go through extream things.

What was right with it?: It was so real and the way you could feel her pain and her flashbacks.

What was wrong with it?: It was so eay to read

Nope. A child's ticket - under 16 - can take out the kiddy books, i.e. picture books, Noddy goes to Toytown, and you can have 6 books. An adult ticket can have 12 books from anywhere. All - all - the non-fiction is adult. Children must never read non-fiction.

sorry. i was just sort of adding a counter opinion. i thought it was a bit farfetched for the kid's dog to get his entrails tangled in a bush, have them placed back into his stomach, have them taken out once again to be washed with SOAP and water, then have them put back in, and still not die immediately. it was a boring book the whole way through with no reward at the end.

I thought the reward was that they were blessed by the angels, but whatever.

Book Title: A Time For Dancing

Book Author: Davida Wills Hurwin

Genre: Realistic Fiction

Quick Synopsis:

This novel is about two inseperable teenage girls named Samantha and Juliana whose friendship has brought them years of good memories. The girls' initial concerns about boyfriends and dance class seem trivial after Jules is diagnosed with histiocytic lymphoma, a deadly form of cancer. Through graphic depictions of what follows, endless sessions of chemotherapy, emergency runs to the hospital and Jules's periodic escapes into a dream state, readers will feel the young victim's weariness as she fights against the body which has betrayed her at such a young age. They will also experience Sam's complex responses as she watches her friend embark on a "solo journey" toward death while being overcome with an unavoidable feeling of helplessness. The dissipation of Jules's hopes, her growing acceptance of the inevitable, and the reactions of peers and family members are hauntingly true to life.

What was right with it?:

The book was an incredible read. It was really able to tug at my emotions because even if you don't have a relationship quite as intense as Jules and Sam's, we all have friends. The novel makes you imagine yourself in one of their shoes. What if I got cancer? What if my one of my friends got cancer? These are sad thoughts that we don't want to face but the book makes them a reality for these two girls.

What was wrong with it?:

I guess if you have a fear of death than you wouldn't be very interested in this book.
